THANKS for joining us and Continuing the Conversation

To cap off EAPOs already busy schedule of provincial webinars, awareness raising educational forums and tailored, cross-sectoral training sessions, we

hosted our 1st Virtual Provincial Conference – “Amplifying Our Collective Voices: Rights Don’t Get Old”, and Master Classes at the end of March 2022.

Our audiences, from across the global community, joined us in welcoming international Author, Journalist and Anti-ageism Activist, Ashton Applewhite, to hear her perspectives on Ageism (perhaps the most significant societal issue we face today) and how it adversely impacts the quality of life, of the steadily growing demographic of older adults.

During a Fire-side Chat, facilitated by Laura Tamblyn Watts, (CEO, CanAge), Ashton spoke about the movement to mobilize against age discrimination and ending elder abuse. Throughout the question period, Ashton’s advocacy towards empowering seniors by challenging our social beliefs that older adults are less valued than younger lives, was a call to action that resonated with many in the zoom room!

The program continued with presentations by Dr. Marie Beaulieu

(Co-Director, WHO Collaborative Centre), Margaret Gillis, (President, ILC),

Dr. Kiran Rabheru (GAROP, Board Chair), Bénédicte Schoepflin (Executive Director, CNPEA) and Margaret MacPherson (Research Associate, CREVAWC).

The dynamic, interactive Master Class sessions held the following two days

with exceptional speakers, including Gregor Sneddon, Executive Director, HelpAge Canada and Jenny Manchester, Communications Manager, UK Campaign to End Loneliness.

Joined by these international specialists and regional professionals in the field of aging, EAPO brought together like-minded stakeholders from various disciplines and sectors to advance their skills and knowledge.

Together we explored new evidence-based tools, innovative programs and actionable strategies that could further strengthen our responses and intervention strategies when presented with instances of ageism and elder abuse.

EAPO would like to THANK all our speakers, participants and acknowledge that through a sustained CALL TO ACTION, TOGETHER, we CAN and ARE making a difference, by working collaboratively towards a common goal - supporting the rights of older adults, ending ageism and stopping elder abuse!

We encourage this movement to continue to grow in momentum because we ALL have a role to play in this. While there were some AHA moments and we still have much to learn from each other, there was a renewed and shared commitment to advance our work of stopping elder abuse and restoring the dignity older adults deserve!

Thank you again for doing your part and we look forward to welcoming you again at the next Provincial Conference.

For more information and to view the archived sessions we invite you to visit www.eapon.ca and most importantly, please do share your feedback with us to inform the development of future educational forums.

Future Us:

Roadmap to Elder Abuse Prevention

The Canadian Network for the Prevention of Elder Abuse (CNPEA) launched a new Roadmap to Elder Abuse Prevention. EAPO is proud to be a partner is this work.

Future Us is a pan-Canadian engagement strategy that has been developed for people of all ages. The roadmap is for citizens, advocates, professionals and leaders in communities and governments to help us work from different parts of society on a shared project to prevent violence and abuse of older people in their homes and communities. Our future is up to us.

We all have a role to play in standing up for the rights of seniors.

The Roadmap outlines what you can do to help in your community.

Specifically, our guest speaker, will explain how the OHRC's Policy applies in situations of age discrimination and the more recent work around the intersectionality of age and the rights of older persons. Ageism plays a significant role in society and gives rise to more broad impacts on policies, programs and legislation that affects a growing demographic.
